Blanks:

Choosing a blank:

Go to fiberglass Supply and look through their catalog of Clark blanks. They have everything from the shortest of short boards to the longest of longobards. These blanks are really close to a finished surfboard shape and already have the stringer installed. I only took off about 1/2" on the rails and just planned the top and bottom smooth before sanding. There is not comparison between these blanks and a block of foam, if you are going to build a board, this is the way to go.

Getting the blank ( shipping ):

This can be the tricky and expensive part. Since I ordered a longboard, it was too long for places like UPS to ship it. That leaves two choices, have them put it on a commercial jet as cargo and pick it up yourself at the airport, or have it shipped by truck. Either way it's not cheap. The thing to do is when you are choosing blanks, see how many will fit into a box and talk your buddys into getting blanks too, so that you can order full boxes and split the shipping between a few people. Also, by truck its cheaper to ship to a comercial address, I think that this is because the shipping company knows that someone will be there, so do this if possible.
