Shaping:
You have two choices here, 1) Buy the "Glassing 101" video by John Carper from Fiberglass Supply, or 2) Wing it.
I bought the video. It doesn't go into too much on board design, however it covers everything that you need to know to actually shape the board. It was extremely helpful in letting me know what to do and how to do it. After you watch the video you might be a little overwhelmed by what goes into shaping a board, don't worry it's really not too bad once you start doing it.
For those of you who want to wing it, here's board shaping in one paragraph. First take your planer and remove the hard outer layer on the blank, the skin. Next, draw the shape you want on one side and cut it out with a hand saw. Flip what you cut off over onto the other side, mark it and saw it. Now you'll have a blank with square edges but the overall shape that you are looking for. Next, make two marks on both left and right sides of the board, one a third out from the stringer and the other two thirds out. These are going to be guides for shaping the rails. Thinking about what you want your rails to look like, plane off foam to the outer mark, then blend this up to the inner third. The prior part really makes more sense in the video. Anyhow, your about done with the planer now, its time for the sanding screen and sand paper. For the rails, have the blank on its side and make runs from tip to tail holding the screen around the edge to round it off. Do this on both sides until they look like the rails that you want. Finally sand the rest of the blank down smooth. This whole deal took me about 2 hours in my backyard. Getting the rails even and smooth is that hard part.
